Intellectual disability is IQ <70 as well as impairment in adaptive skills.

Difference is noted > categorisation occurs (into intellectual disability) > stereotyping assumed > evaluation made > behaviour follows (behave as if these stereotypes are true)

Labels are good because they help us understand differences, management and intervention strategies can be well targeted, support groups can be identified. Labels can be bad as they restrict opportunities, define people by what they can and can't do and segregates and separates.

Medical model focuses on the individual and the disease/pathological process; social model focuses on the group and the content.
